Week 11 and 12 (Post-Production) – w/c 1st May

During these two weeks, I had the pleasure of joining Javier and Danay in the edit suite to see what Danay had achieved so far with the edit and observe changes that was being made. Javier took the time to take me through what had been done already and asked for my advice on whether certain shots should be switched out. For example, a shot of Detective Foster interrogating James involves a camera tilt up. Unfortunately, this came out rather shaky and lacking in control. This is something we did not pick up on during the shoot as we were on such a tight schedule. Javier and I decided to cut this shot and instead, cut to a close-up of Foster talking to James. Problem-solving and cooperating in this manner with the director is something I believe is vital to the success of a film.

Javier informed me that there were also issues with the phone conversation scene with James. We had reshot this scene due to originally shooting in the wrong codec. However, the updated footage was lagging on Adobe Premiere Pro, suggesting issues with the frame rate that could not be solved in post. This may have been due to using the 7” BlackMagic monitor to record – perhaps it wasn’t configured correctly - rather than the 5” monitor which we used for the remainder of the shoot. Javier let me know that we have two options – to try and make the reshoots work or to use the original footage in the 4:2:1 codec, which would make the colour grade much more difficult.

I was also told by Javier that we would not be able to include the exterior shots of Lincoln streets that I had shot with Millie and Julia the week before. Apparently, the footage was shaky in places and simply did not feel appropriate to include in the film. As disappointing as this is, I do understand. There were also shots of Lincoln cathedral that could not be used as the frame rate of the camera (25fps) did not align with the frequency of electricity of the lights, causing them to flicker on camera. It also wasn’t ideal that the gimbal shots were not recorded in the correct codec.

This week we also shot more interviews for the behind-the-scenes video. Javier and I gave an interview together, as the Director and Director of Photography. We discussed our favourite scenes to shoot, the most challenging elements of the shoot and what our inspirations were.
