Shooting Day 2 - James’ House (Sunday 27th March)

On the second day of shooting, we were scheduled to film scenes in Elisabeth and James’ bedroom and the living room. We started later than intended, which was my fault as I had woken up feeling extremely ill. Despite this, I ensured I made it to set as quickly as possible and was raring to go. In the end, this shoot went rather smoothly in comparison to the day before, and it very much helped having Theodora Clayton on set as a camera assistant and runner. There were issues involving the lighting in the bedroom scene. There was a large amount of natural light coming in through the window, even after flagging it, which made the image appear incredibly. We attempted to use a Bi-Colour LED to light Linda (Jasmin), whilst the lamp on the bedside table aimed to illuminate Elisabeth’s (Jamie) face but it made little to no difference and the colour temperate matched that of the natural light – this might cause issues with grading in post.

There had also been a miscommunication between Javier and I, which meant my camera and lighting set-up plans had been created with the Airbnb’s other bedroom in mind. This meant I was not as prepared for the shoot as I would’ve like to have been, and there was difficult achieving effective coverage of the scene that included a close-up of Linda’s face.

My favourite part of the day involved shooting the living room scenes. I created a lighting set-up involving a Rayzr Fresnel light positioned outside of the house and shining through the window, creating a venetian blind effect on Linda’s (Jasmin) face.

Despite things running smoothly in terms of time, there were occasions of tension between members of the crew which needed to be addressed. At the end of the day, Julia and Millie organised a crew meeting to discuss what was going well so far on set, and what we needed to work on. Some points raised involved being aware of how we were speaking to one another on set, as it was starting to appear unprofessional and was being picked up by the actors. Javier and I recognised our ability to collaborate effectively under pressure, coming up with effective solutions to problems and new ideas even with a time restraint.
